Ok problems over. This weblog has now officially moved to http://42.blogs.warnock.me.uk
However, http://davew.typepad.com/42 will continue to work as I have no plans to move away from typepad.
The problem was timing of DNS propagation. The instructions said don't make the new domain active until the dns is correct. Well according to my use of dig it was correct, but really the instructions should have said. Wait until you can see the site at the new domain in your web browser then make it active.
Anyway praise to Laura in Typepad technical support for her response, although only a slight re-wording would have meant no problem.
no problems with the move then...i need to do a similar thing with my own blog and its comforting to know that the folks at typepad are into helping people! you should ask them for payment now ;-) you just promoted their customer service for FREE!! :o

The only remaining issues are a) getting google to look at the new site so the search works b) getting Technorati sorted c) not sure why my About page is still on the old domain.
Anyway happy to promote typepad, I have been using it for over a year and am still very happy with it. Beats running everything on my own server so far as I am concerned.
