I have now got Ubuntu 5.10 installed fully on my laptop. First reactions are
Installation was easy as I expected. Really simple questions to answer. The documentation is now getting very helpfully focused so I have been able to solve the 2 things that were not automatic (highest possible screen resolution and WPA for wireless security).
I can even play DVD's (after a fashion, it does not seem entirely reliable yet). So far I have tried Ogle (looks good, crashes often), Totem (fails to load dvd's), MPlayer (plays but aspect ratio is wrong and will only show at one size).
But everything else I have tried so far looks good and works well.
The first real test is going to be tomorrow morning using OpenOffice 2.0 on this laptop for the morning service. A few tests to do this evening first.
Some of the useful documentation.
First: UserDocumentation - Ubuntu Wiki is the best starting point, although Unofficial Ubuntu 5.04 Starter Guide is excellent (although now a little out of date, we need the 5.10 version).
I used 915resolution: Intel Video BIOS Hack and i915Driver - Ubuntu Wiki to get the correct screen resolution.
For WPA security for WIFI I used the WPAHowto - Ubuntu Wiki but there are several options in there. Read them all before starting. In the end I followed the first set which worked but did not automatically restart when the machine was rebooted, for that I used the gui from the network icon by the clock in the menu panel.
