Are "nice" and "honest" mutually exclusive? is a good post. Given recent discussions (see 42: More on torture) I suspect that many also believe the following:
- "Nice" and "Passionate" are mutually exclusive
- "Nice" and "Right" are mutually exclusive
- "Nice" and "Funny" are mutually exclusive
- "Nice" and "Cool" are mutually exclusive
On the other hand I suspect that "Honest", "Passionate", "Right", "Funny" and "Cool" are all mostly ineffective without some measure of "Niceness".
It seems to me that it is through the "Niceness" that we demonstrate the worth, value and humanity of the other person, and it is those things that may allow them to be open to persuasion. One problem with being "on-line" is that the other persons worth, value and humanity are easily ignored.
Maybe this should be less of an issue on peoples blogs which is their "home". It seems to me that it has been a problem on usenet for years and now that has pretty much disappeared it has moved to the slashdots of this world where it is more visible.

Is "Speak the truth in love." mutually exclustive?

I suspect "Speak the truth in love." is now meaningless as it has become an excuse for saying anything/everything.
It might be nice to break it down in order to make the original intent clearer.
