Latest Ubuntu delivers on the promise of Open Source | Ubuntu
My copies (1 x desktop for my laptop and 1 x alternate for our Sun Ray Server) have nearly finished downloading so I am willing to tell you about this.
Ubuntu 7.04 (aka Feisty Fawn) is absolutely worth downloading and trying even if you have only ever used windows. You can boot it and run it from CD without changing your windows at all. You can have it as an extra to windows or you can replace windows with it.
It is free, not just the operating system but all the software too (from a complete office suite, through graphics, through everything related to the web/internet, accounting, utilities etc etc).
It is easy to use and it is powerful and reliable.
Why is anyone still using Windows?

Why is anyone still using Windows?
Sadly, my translation work relies on software which is only available for Windows. I suspect that many people are in similar positions. Also, is OpenOffice, assuming that is the suite in Ubuntu, really up to the standard of MS Office?

Peter,
OpenOffice is excellent. You can try it on Windows anyway to see how it matches up. I have no problems doing all I want with it.
There are plenty of other office apps available (and easy to install and free) for Ubuntu although yes OpenOffice is the probably the nearest full MS Office competitor.
There are a number of options available to run windows applications on Linux. Wine is free. Crossover Office is another and there are others which install a complete copy of windows to run inside Linux.
It is also worth asking for linux support, particularly for specialist software for charities and those in poorer countries as the potential license and hardware savings are huge.
