I rode a Flyer electric bike with Shimano roller brakes for more than 4 years, about 15'000km total on a relatively steep commute, 12km and 350m elevation.

Although those brakes are not as precise or aggressive as disc brakes, I've found them very good for city driving. You need to pull hard on them to get strong braking, but the power is there.

The nice thing about them is that they are almost maintenance free. Mine would usually start squeaking in cold weather after a while, and a few drops of chain lubricant brought them back to normal. Shimano recommends their expensive special lubricant, but plain old chain spray worked for me. I did replace the front brake once, the rear one still worked well after 15'000km.

I have since replaced that bike with a faster Flyer T8HS which has got Magura hydraulic rim brakes - much more precise of course, but I doubt the rims will last for 15'000 km - time will tell.

    Bertand,

Thanks for sharing your experience. Great to hear how good you found the roller brakes.

I suspect that the problem is that mosts tests of bikes like the Trek Soho are by people who are used to road bikes and mountain bikes with exceptional brakes who do not represent the typical rider or use.
