Vote for a Change

Vote for a Change.

The expense crisis reveals a nation governed by a political elite that has stopped listening and who are accountable to no one but their party machines. Too many MPs seem more interested in changing their homes than changing the world.

Our society faces real problems – mass unemployment and growing poverty, the threat of climate chaos and an erosion of our civil liberties to name but three. These all require effective government working on behalf of the popular will.

Yet our whole political system is close to collapse. Just when the system needed to be strong it has been brought to its knees. Only the British people can put this right. We demand a new electoral system that makes everyone’s vote count.

Alongside the next general election there should be a binding referendum on whether to change to a new more proportional electoral system. This should be drawn up by a large jury of randomly selected citizens, given the time and information to deliberate on what voting system and other changes would make parliament more accountable to citizens.

Politics is now too important to be left to the politicians. We demand the right to be able to vote for a change:

Better training and good bike bits

Had a good training ride yesterday, improvement on 42: Climbing practice anyway. It was Ministerial Synod (sort of Church government meeting for Methodist Ministers), held in Wellingborough. So I cycled there. It is just under 10 miles but they feel quite hilly (for this part of Northamptonshire anyway).

To increase the training effect I arranged for a 250mph headwind on the way there. Definitely should have been a hurricane warning or something.

I also towed by Bob Yak trailer, makes me work harder and makes it easy to carry my mini laptop and a full set of clothes.

Two new bits of equipment have made the Giant Yukon fx2 more comfortable and versatile. So here is another Bike bits list:

GR2 Magnesium Handlebar Grips

Fantastic for comfort and increasing the number of hand positions.

Ultimate 5 Classic Large Bar Bag
Good place for your packed lunch, books, coat etc. Nice and solid, easy to fit and easy to open (no fiddly zips).

Topeak Road Morph With Gauge
My favourite pump to carry with you. Very easy to use and capable of good pressure easily.

Tubus Locc Rear Rack
I have one of these on my Trek Road Bike, fantastic as it has a clamp for your U-Lock built into the rack. You always have the lock with you and it does not have to fill a pannier. Plus locking up is much quicker.

That'll do for now.

Yet more snow

When should you close places and cancel events due to the weather?

Today for example it would have been a lot better if Jane had not had to drive all the way to Northampton only to discover that they had just closed the school.

Yes we look at the county website, yes they listened to local radio all the way. But it was only when they got to the school entrance they found out it was closed. Then they saw a friend who had got there by bus to find the school closed and no bus to go home on, so they gave him a lift.

This is not really good enough.

When kids and teachers are travelling longer distances to school the county website should be correct before 7:30am.

It the light of this opinion we have made some decisions about Sunday.

Sunday 8th Feb

We have already decided to cancel the Sunday Lunch at Raunds Methodist Church this week.

The service will happen even if the preacher can't get here as I am confident enough people can walk and share in worship together.

I am in Ringstead on Sunday morning and it looks like I'll be walking there. The evening service at Old Weston will happen at Home Farm rather than the chapel (and that only if I can get there).

Circuit Mens breakfast

It is now 3:10am and in 20mins I will be driving five men from the Nene Valley Circuit away for a Circuit mens breakfast with a difference.

We are off to the Whitechapel Mission in London to cook breakfast for up to 200 people who are homeless.

Note five because that is all that is needed rather than all that is available.

The car is packed with clothing, food and toiletries from people all over the circuit.

Sadly it is rather foggy so not expecting a nice journey.

I will be back for the opening service of the 24/7 prayer room in Thrapston at 2pm.

[Update] 1:10pm

Back home. Cooked breakfast for 120. Busy but good time.

Todd Bentley gets even more violent

In  42: The Todd Bentley revival I said one of my key concerns about Todd Bentley was violence, at that point I had only seen Todd Bentley boasting about violence he had committed.

Now thanks to this mans ego you can actually see him kicking kneeing [Update: see comment from Peter Kirk below and my response] someone in the stomach when that person is suffering from cancer of the colon. I literally could not believe my eyes. The man collapses on the floor in pain.

See it at YouTube – WORST ASSAULT at Todd Bentley Raging Revival part 3. Note that "LocalPastor" has added text over the top of the images (don’t know why, we don’t need editing to know this is wrong).

Naturally it seems there is no testimony that this man has been healed (personally I would think there ought to be a law suit).

I don’t promise not to write about Todd Bentley in the future. But I can say that my doubts have been removed.

Scripture is clear that there can be false prophets and false signs and wonders. I do believe that Todd Bentley is a false prophet.

A relevant scripture reference is Matthew 24:24 (in context). Or you could look at 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. Yes I am aware that in both these are signs of the end times, sadly there have been cases of this throughout Christian history – so it may not mean Christ is returning imminently. As for myself I believe in living  simultaneously preparing for him to come today and not for a 1,000 years. In that way I attempt to make each day count yet in a sustainable way in case Christ does not come immediately.

The teaching at Revival Fires, Dudley

I have transcribed part of the teaching from Revival Fires at Dudley. It comes from this clip YouTube – Hearing Aids No Longer Needed Day 36 at about 3mins 35secs.

"If the Word could have changed this nation … If the word could have done it then we should have been in a place where this nation was changed but do you know what? People have got tired of the Word because it is devoid of power"

"People are beginning to get a deep conviction again that is based in his power as Thessalonian’s says rather than just in words of wisdom"

Some questions:

  • I am unclear about what is actually meant by "the Word" in this teaching. The usage seems different from my normal understanding. Is it a printed book? Is it Jesus? It is the preached gospel? How does "the word" relate to "words of wisdom"?
  • Is it possible to say this nation has not been changed by the Word of God (however "word" is understood)? Seems an odd reading of history. Try telling Wilberforce, or Wesley that!
  • Which Thessalonians and where in it? Maybe 2 Thessalonians  2:9-12?

9 The coming of the lawless one will be
in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays
of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, 10
and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They
perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie  12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

It seems that displays of power, signs and wonders are not always truth. We cannot simply look for power and say there must be the gospel.

15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.

No indication that the first teaching from words (verbal or written) must be replaced by signs of power, instead we should hold firm to it – because the first teaching has power.

4 For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you,  5
because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with
power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived
among you for your sake. 6 You became
imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the
midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

Clearly the gospel is not words alone, it is not words without power, but it is also clearly not power without the words. Would it not have been good to look at this in context (well a good start would be to actually mention what the text is and maybe even read it). So we could consider 1 Thessalonians 1:13

13 And we also thank God continually
because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us,
you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of
God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

Where is the lack of power of the Word in Thessalonians?

Overall what does this teaching really mean? Not a lot in one sense, however, I can easily see how hearing this might leave you understanding that the power you see at work in this meeting should be replacing the word as revelation of God. That goes against the clear and simple reading of 1 and 2 Thessalonians which demonstrate the sound basis of the teaching and the need to hold to it while being ready for the experience of the Spirit.

Thessalonians makes clear the need for the Word and Spirit together, in no way does it support any idea of supplanting the word as I understand this teaching to be suggesting.

It seems to me that this goes a long way to supporting the understanding that people from Raunds have come away from Dudley with see 42: The Todd Bentley revival.
